I’ve always been slightly obsessed with the ocean. One of the very first toys that I remember playing with were these tiny plastic mermaid bath toys. They had real hair like a Barbie, and brightly colored plastic tails. They came in a little bath sponge float (I think this was supposed to encourage actual washing up, as if that was fun at that age) and each had a baby mermaid, and little pet sidekick.
I can remember spending hours playing with those toys as my bathtub became the ocean through the eyes of a 5 year old. I’m still obsessed with the ocean and all creatures in it. I was working on designing some jewelry and wanted something with an octopus or squid arm. The old ink drawings of the Kraken, those legends of deep caught my eye and I started to dream up this painting.
Something about the simplicity of black and white always appeals to me, and sounded challenging and fun. I had a large 33” x 35” panel of birch wood I was wanting to get my brush on and it seemed just right for this project. I used a combination of Acrylic and White ink on a black background. The final step that finished it perfectly was a glossy coat of clear resin (my newest obsession).
This guy is definitely one of my favorites, I hope you love him as much as I do.
Kisses,
Ro
