Having grown up on a boat traveling the ocean from island to island. I feel that my connection to the sea has been one of the biggest inspirations for my artwork, and it comes though in most everything that I do. Being an artist, I’ve always seen beauty in life.
I think that pattern of thought really helped me to focus on finding that beauty again when I found myself struggling as a single parent with two very small children to support overnight. On a recent trip to the Lourve in Paris, I noticed how much of the art focused on pain, sadness, death, darkness and misery.
As an artist I feel that we see emotion everywhere we look. But I think you choose which emotions you focus on. Pain can be beautiful, but only when you see it in a positive light. I make a conscious effort every day to surround myself and my two boys with beauty and joy. Sometimes that can be as simple as a moment to enjoy a cup of coffee, or to watch the waves of the ocean roll into the shore….
